New Leader Essentials Training

New Leader Essentials is training for all Scouting volunteers. This an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting and Venturing.

Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers - Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders - take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.

The benefits of New Leader Essentials include:

  1. Better assists our movement in implementing the full Scouting program with chartered organizations.
  2. Provides a better understanding of the advantages of encouraging youth and adult volunteers to move through the traditional program as their youth mature.
  3. Creates an awareness of the different aspects of the Scouting program, which may result in leaders taking advantage of those programs for a child in a different age group.

All new adult leaders in all Scouting programs should participate in this course as soon as possible after volunteering.

The course presents an overview of Scouting, including the organization's mission, aims, and methods. It also provides new leaders with a look at the resources available to them through the Boy Scouts of America, and a clear understanding of Scouting's expectations of its adult leadership.

Course topics include:

  1. Goals of Scouting
  2. How Youth Grow and Develop
  3. Where You Fit In
  4. Where You Get Help
  5. Who Pays for Scouting
  6. Keeping Scouting Safe
  7. Your Bridge to Scouting

After completing New Leader Essentials, volunteer leaders take part in leader-specific training to further prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities relating to their leadership positions.

Information on this training, when offered, can be found on the Upcoming Events page.
